We are only a few weeks away from tryouts for the 2013 summer touring season, and we’re excited to get things underway! The following post has information about tryouts as well as general information for the summer season.
We have put together an online form
for you to fill out to help us understand a bit more about you for tryouts. Please take a minute to fill it out. Please note that this is different than the electronic form you may have filled out to provide your contact information.
Saturday and Sunday, May 4
and 5, 2013 – first tryout tournament (Soggy Bottom – Guelph).
- Currently we have signed up two teams for this tournament and will add a third if necessary so everyone gets enough playing time. The individual player cost for this tournament will be around $20 and we will collect this fee Thursday, May 2 at tryouts.
- We are informally planning a group event to go and see the Toronto RUSH professional ultimate team play in Toronto at 7pm Saturday night (Their first home game). If you are interested in joining us, please indicate on the tryout form)
Following Soggy Bottom, first cuts will be made. Cuts will be emailed personally and you will be given a phone number of a captain if you wish to discuss this decision.
Saturday and Sunday, May 11
and 12, 2013 – second tryout tournament (TUF – Toronto).
- Currently we have signed up two teams for this tournament. The individual player fee for this tournament is $25 and we will collect this fee Thursday, May 9 at tryouts.
Following TUF we will make final cuts. Cuts will be emailed personally and you will be given a phone number of a captain if you wish to discuss this decision.
Additional Tryout Details:
At tryouts, the Whiplash leadership team will be evaluating players based on skill level, athleticism, teamwork, and fitness. Fitness testing will include 20m shuttle, T test, reaction drill, and broad jumps. Skill level will be assessed with drills and scrimmages. All activities will be explained at tryouts.
*If you are planning on trying out for another touring team at the same time as Whiplash, please plan on attending as many of our tryouts as you can, and let us know so we can make sure we see enough of you.
Summer 2013 touring season information:
The plan for the rest of the season is to have a Whiplash competitive team and a Whiplash development team.
The competitive team will have a goal of performing well at Nationals in Vancouver and will be practicing every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Here is a list of the tournaments the competitive team will attend this summer:
- Soggy Bottom (tryout)
- TUF (tryout)
- May Day
- Northern Flights or Comedy of Errors
- No Borders
The development team will have a goal of player development and will be practicing only once a week on Tuesdays. The development team tournament schedule will be decided based on player interest. We are excited to announce that our development team coach will be Jeff Eng – he brings extensive touring experience in the mixed and open divisions at both the university and club level. He’s played most notably with Waterloo’s Liquid and Toronto’s Bombing Mad Fatties, winning a bronze medal at Nationals. As a player, Jeff is known for his ability to excel in a variety of roles and his excellent decision making. He’s looking forward to sharing his knowledge of the game with the players on our development team.
I think that’s all for now! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any of the leadership team (email@example.com
